Can You File Taxes Without an SSN?
When you are in the United States, you can still file taxes with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) even if you don’t have a Social Security Number (SSN). However, the process may be a bit more complicated without an SSN. This article will explain in detail how to apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to file taxes, as well as its main uses and benefits.
What Is an SSN?
In the U.S., a Social Security Number is a government-issued identification number primarily for legally authorized workers and residents. Most U.S. citizens and permanent residents have an SSN. It is mainly used for tax filing, employment, applying for social benefits, and other financial transactions.
What Is an ITIN?
If you are not eligible for an SSN but still need to file taxes, you can apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
The ITIN is issued by the IRS to people who cannot obtain an SSN, for example:
Nonresident aliens
Individuals residing in the U.S. who are not eligible for an SSN
Certain nonresident alien spouses or dependents of U.S. taxpayers
An ITIN is a nine-digit number starting with “9” and has the same format as an SSN (9NN-NN-NNNN).
Main Uses and Benefits of an ITIN
In addition to tax filing, an ITIN can be used for the following:
Opening a bank account – Some U.S. banks allow you to use an ITIN instead of an SSN to open accounts.
Applying for credit cards and building credit history – Some banks accept ITINs for credit card applications. With a credit card, you can build your credit score, which will help you when applying for other credit cards or loans in the future.
Tax benefits – Children of non-U.S. citizens or non–green card holders who live with their parents and have an ITIN may qualify for certain tax benefits.
Married filing jointly – A resident alien in the U.S. can apply for an ITIN for their spouse, even if the spouse does not live in the U.S., to take advantage of joint filing tax benefits.
Opening brokerage accounts – Securities accounts require either an SSN or an ITIN to open.
E-commerce platform accounts – Platforms like Amazon, TikTok, and Etsy require an SSN, EIN, or ITIN to complete account verification.
How to Apply for an ITIN
To apply for an ITIN, you need to complete IRS Form W-7 and submit supporting documents such as:
Passport, birth certificate, or other identity documents
Tax-related documents (such as a tax return)
You can apply in one of three ways:
Mail your documents to the IRS
Apply through an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA)
Make an appointment at a designated IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center
Once processed, the IRS will mail your ITIN to you.
