Need more time for tax filing?

The tax filing deadline is usually April 15. You can request an extension until October 15, but taxes owed must still be paid by April 15. The extension only applies to filing, not payment.

When is the U.S. tax filing deadline?

The tax filing deadline is usually April 15. If it falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day. However, taxes are still due by the original deadline, so you must estimate your tax liability in advance if applying for an extension.

  • If you expect a refund, there's no need to pay when requesting an extension—the sooner you file, the sooner you’ll receive your refund.

  • If you expect to owe taxes, estimate the amount and submit your extension request along with payment by the deadline.

How to apply for an extension?

You can get an automatic six-month extension to file your tax return by submitting IRS Form 4868. There are two ways to file:

  • By Mail – Send the paper Form 4868 by mail. If you owe taxes, include your payment (check or money order) in the same envelope and send it to the address listed in the form instructions.

  • Electronically – File Form 4868 using an electronic filing system. You can also pay any tax due at the same time through electronic funds withdrawal or money order.

You must apply by the regular tax filing deadline. No matter the reason, filing an extension gives you extra time to complete your return.

Failing to pay or file your taxes on time can lead to interest and penalties:

  • Interest: Accrues daily from the due date until paid. Rate = federal short-term rate + 3%.

  • Late Payment Penalty: 0.5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25%.

  • Late Filing Penalty: 5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25%. If over 60 days late, the minimum is $450 (2023) or 100% of tax due, whichever is less.

  • Combined Penalty: If both apply, total is 5% per month (0.5% late payment + 4.5% late filing), up to 25%.

To avoid penalties, apply for an extension and pay at least 90% of your estimated tax by the original deadline. You’ll then have until October 15 to file. When filing, report the estimated payment on Form 1040.
